OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.
A BPEciilL meeting of the members of the Board of, Works of the above Council was held a£ Paeroa at , noc-ii on Monday Idsi; wheri ihe following tenders for the construction of ihe Karangahake road were opened, viz, ;; — • Section A : Birm'io'g'ham, #81 ,- Thos"; Quiring £63 ; J E^elly,, Jeo' ; Edward Bairi, Engineer's* estimate jfes'B? 15s 4d. Section B. : Jamieson and Co," £128 12s 8d ; E. Bain, £84 ; Birmingham, £228 ; Marsh and Co., £99 3s j J. Kelly, £98 16s. Engineer's estimate; £175 16s Bd. Section C. : E. Bain,- £47 10s j Birmingham, £78 ; J; Kelly, £54 3s. Engineer's estimate; £76 17s 7d. Coomer and Co. tendered for all three sections in a lump sum of £199 10'sj Thoriias Ritchie for same, £259 I4"s 7d; Engineer's estimate, £201 9s 7d. The following tenders were accepted '. Section A. : Mr Kelly • for Section B : Marsh and Co. ; for Section 0. : Mr Bain. Total amounts to' £206 13s. An extraordinary meeting of the council was heU on Tuesday everiing last. There was a full attendance of members iind the Cliairmm said that ho called the meeting in consequence' of there being sundry important matters derriauding their immediate attention. The lirst business brought forward was the " Tui Creek Track," respecting whicli Mr J. A. Dobson wrote to the Chairman as follows : — Sir^ — As suggested in your ieiter of th. j 18th ultimo' to MrF. PAvitt, en,ineer, a meeting of the committee first appointed to carry out the above work was held on Saturday, the 23rd ultimo, when it was resolved to recommend to you the formation of the tracks" as mentioned hereunder, and to ask your approval jf the same, viz. : Extension of the present road to claims situated northward of the' prospectors ; 25 chains" at £1, £25. Branch track to claims at the south end of the lotie, 40 chains ati £2, £80. forming connections" at lower part of the* present road, 30 chains at £I', £30. Engineer's charges £10. Total. £145. These estimates are only' apportion -i re, but they are considered fair by Mr' Pavitt, arid will probably be found to be" pretty near the actual cost. . The Committee and other persons interested in" the claims ao Tni Cre6k, will be glad if you will authorise the donstrtfetiorfor tne' roads" menti >ned at as" early a date as* possible. This matter was relegated to the' Finance Committee, who are' t6' report' upon it at the next meeting of the' ; Council. Owharoa* Main Adit Level.— -An application" fi'din' the miners residing at' Owharoa was read requesting the council to lend its aiil and influence tofr'ards securing the subsidy of £400 prdmiseJ by Mr Larnach,' for the purpose of driving' the Smile of Fortune Company's low' leVel a' distance of 500'jfeet north of the' present workings. The' letter stated that the iriiners were' prepared to subscribe £10p in labour towards carrying , out the object in vie »v,- but in order to' avail themselves of the Government subsidy it would be necessary to realise £200, and they asked the Council to subscribe one-half that amount. O^ the motion of Cv Moore, seconded by Or Walsh, it was redolved that the Clerk be in'strticted to' write to the Mines' Department, for the purpdse of learning whether the grant in question was available, and if so, that it bo applied for at once. County Clerkship. — Mr T. Lawless, !' vvho was appointed to perform the duties of clerk, treasurer, and foreman of works, for the Council at its last' monthly meeting, wrote to the' Chairman as follows : — Sir, — I beg most res-. pectfuMy to' decline the appointment of clerk, etc.,- to y<ur Council subject to' the conditions contained in your telegram'to hand of yesterday's date, but' am prepared to accept it on' the original' - basis as convoyed- to me at a meeting oi?
