Admiral Kuarr, of the German Naval Service, has been ordered to proceed to Samoa for the purpose of settling the disputes which have arisen between the Germans and the native authorities, and of restoring King Malietoa to his rulerehip.. The Admiral is expected to reach Samoa by the 20th instant. Count Hadfield, the German ambassador in England, has formerly repudiated on behalf of the German Government any intention to annex Samoa. London, January 15. — Mr J. A. Froude, the well-known historian, who recently visited Auetralia, has just published an account of his travels under the title of "Oceania." In^the chapters referring to Victoria and New South Wales, Mr Froude epeaks in eulogistic terms of Sir Henry B. Loch, ' Governor of the former colony, and of Mr W. B. Dalley, Q.C., who was At-torney-General and Acting-Colonial Secretary of New South Wales at the time of Mr Froude's visit. He also refers in complimentary terms to the city of Adelaide. London, January 19,— Mr W. T. Stead, editor or the " Pall Mall Gazette," who was sentenced, on November 10, to three months' imprisonment in connection with the Lily Armstrong abduction case, was released ! yeßterday. To-day a meeting was held to f welcome Mr Stead after his incarceration. The proceedings were characterised by great enthusiasm*
