Melbourne, January 27. A terrible tragedy occurred at Coburg yesterday, where a mother and three daughters combined to murder the younger sister, which they did by nearly severing her head from the body. The daughters afterwards attacked each other, f and all were more or less severely wounded, one being in an extremely critical state. The cause of the crime ia believed to have been re ligious mania, the mother being entirely demented. Brisbane, January 23 A. collision occurrel to-day between the Australian Steam Navigation Company's s.s, Gintra, and the Queensland Shipping Company's s.s, Archer. The latter vessel sustained damage to a considerable extent. Adelaide, January 22. Alexander Laurence, teller in the City of Melbourne Bank, was arrested by the police yesterday on a charge of embezzling £170, the property of the bank. The accused confessed that he had embezzled altogether over £900 by manipulating the mutilated notes account. Laurence was formerly in the Bank of New Zealand at Auckland.
