OHINEMURI. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Paeroa, Friday.

This week there i" very little news of importance respecting any of the mines to chronicle from here. j The Smelting Company's-assay value of \ the ore from the Crown mine has been declared at £8 16s per ton, and this amount falls far short of the result anticipated by not a few sanguine believers in its worth. It has also occasioned a great" amount of croaking and a corresponding depreciation in the valne of K.uangahake stock generally. Now, if the Smelting Company has <?iven the correct assay value of the ore in question, I for one, cannot see anything to cavil about * The parcel treated amounted to l>o tons, and the return is stated to be equal to, if not superior, to the average yield obtainable from the well known ounny Corner mine, which 'is nowpaying handsomely. Then the return of £14 8s per ton for the 18-ton parcel of ore from the Hose mine has * more than realised expectations, and, in a great measure, has been the means of. restoring public confidence in the future of this field, which is certain to come to the front as a bullion producer, ihe croakers' opinion to the contrary notwithstanding. To-day the first shipment of 30 tons of of ore from the Sutro mine was forwarded to the Thames per s.s. Potuku, and, judging by appearances, the return should range close up to that obtained from the Rose. There is a good show of gold and silver' bearing stone in the rise above the low, level in the Kenilworth mine, from which a 20-ton parcel of ore is now being carted' in here, preparatory to being sent on to, the smelting furnace, Thames. At Waihi the prospecting operations in the Silverton mine are being attended with very satisfactory results. Samples of ore from this mine, assayed a few days since, gave returns ranging Irom 20 to 180 ounces of bullion to the ton.
