MELANCHOLY CASE OF DROWNING IN VICTORIA.
Melbourne, Nov. 1. A very sad case of drowning took place here to-day in the Murray river atEchuca. Captain Barnes and his son, 12 years of age, being drowned. Father and son wer6 on the steamer Resolute, whioh is moored to the bank of the river inside the park fence, when the lad fell into the river. The father who is a good swimmer, at once jumped in to rescue his son, but the lad clutched him around the neck, and both went beneath the water.' In a few seconds they rose again, but only the father's hands and arms were visible abovethe water, and almost in a moment he disappeared again, the boy apparently "still dinging to his hook. Mr Birkett, a shipwright; who was near by; jumped into a boat' in- order to save the child at the dame time as the father' jumped, into the water head' first. In jumping Captain Barnes struck the boat, and} Birkett was capsized r 4rito the; river.' 'Before lie r could recover himself and fender assistance both father and son had finally disappeared.- '
