Melbourne, Nov. 6.— The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited), held their usual weekly sale yeeterday afternoon, when a fairly representative catalogue of seme 2,800 bales was submitted. There was a large attendance of buyers, and competitions was anniated, but there was no change in the tone of the sales, the prices ruling about the same as previous week. A parcel of greasy merino lambswool brought 13jtd, being the highest price obtained this season for that class wools Greasy merinos sold up to 12|d, scoured wool up to 15£ d, while for a lot of washed fleece, Is was obtained. Melbourne, November 8. — A serious fire broke out yesterday on the premises of Mr D. Munro and Co., contractors, Queenptreet, which resulted, before the flames were extinguished, in damage to the extent of several thousand pounds. Melbourne, November 9. - Nothing further is known as to the truth of the reported ! massacre in New Guinea of the Sydney Geographical Expedition. A telegram appears in the "Age" stating that two Malays belonging to the expedition, who escaped slaughter, brought the news to Thursday Island, but they contradict each other in their versions of the alleged massacre. Sydney, '!Nbv, 6.— Sir John Robertson is generally recognised as the leader of the Opposition. An effort will be made as soon as possible to test the strength of parties. | His Eminence Cardinal Moran arrived yester-day from Europe, and was accorded a most enthusiastic reception. Sydney, Nov 6. - Sir Alexander Stuart, ex-Premier of New South Wales, will shortly proceed to England. The trip will probably extend over two years. A change has been considered necessary owing to Sir Alexander's ill-health. Sydney, Novesiben? —Mr Slattery, Minister of Justice, and Mr Lyne, Secretary of Public Works, have been re-elected for their respective constituencies unopposed. Sydney, November 10.— No further details have been received with regard to the reported massacre of the Geographical expedition by Fly ttiver natives. The rumours of their fate are generally discredited in well-informed circles. His Excellency Lord Augustus Loftus and family left yesterday evening for Melbourne, where they will be the guests of Sir Harry Loch for a short time prior to their departure for England. Pending the' arrival of Lord Carrington, the administration of Government will be in the hands of Sir Jas. Martin, Lieutenant-Governor of the colony.
