Trenton Defeats Nordenfeldt In the Canterbury Plate. [REUTERS CABLEGRAM.]
Melbourne, Nov 7. The last day's racing of the V.R.C. Spring Meeting took place to-day at Flemington. There was a good attendance of the j public, and the various events were well contested. Results :—: — Caxtebbury Plate, a sweepstakes of lOsovs each, 2ft, with 375 added ; the second horse to receive 190eovs out of the stake. "Weight-for-age. Two miles and a-half . Mr M O'Brien's b h Trenton, 4yrs, by Mueket— Frailty, 9st 1 Hon. James White's b c Nordenfeldt, 3yrs, by Musket -Onyx, 7st 61bs ... 2 Mr'J. Locke's b c Isonomy, 3yrs, by Win terlake - Ruby, 7st 61bs 3 Six horses started for this event, which was closely contested throughont. There was a magnificent struggle all the way up the straight between Trenton and Nordenfeldt, which resulted in Trenton winning a desperate race by a short neck. Time, 4mins. 39|secs. The V.R.C. Handicap, a sweepstakes of ssovB. each, with 250 added. The second horse to receive oOsovs. out of the stake. For three-year-olds and upwards. One mile and three-quarters. Mr A. Smart's eh m Brown and Rose, 4yrs, by Somnus— Giggler 1 Mr M. Loughlins b h Sheet Anchor, aged, by St. Albans- Queen Mary ... 2 Mr S. Davis's b m Lesbia, 6yrs, by Tim Whiffler— Peerless 3 Sixteen horses started. It was a splendid race throughout, Brown and Rose beating Sheet Anchor by a neck. Time, 3mins. 7£secs. Hem us won the Mares' Produce Stakes, Arsenal second, and Ringmaster third ; the Flemington Stakes fell to Damodes, Free Handicap to Cerise and Blue, and the Steeplechase to Lizette.
