ESCAPE OF PRISONERS.-Ex-citing Chase.
♦ - . Auckland. Nov 7. At an early hour this morning two prisoners named Henry Harrison and Richard Hackett, the former undergoing a sentence of six months, and the latter three months imprisonment, made a desparate attempt to escape from their quarters. At six o'clock, the prisoners were ordered to carry breakfasts to the female division of the prison, and were in charge of Warder Madigan. Harrison had a pannikin of porridge to take to the railway cutting, when suddenly he turned and threw it deliberately at the warder's head, literally smothering him. with the contents. Both prisoners immediately ran across the quarry and down to the railway. Madigan, who had been knocked down, sprang to his feet and chased the prisoners, calling out for help as loudly as possible. A man named D. Maloney, who was working in a paddock at the rear of the prison, dropped his implement, pulled off his shoes and went in hot pursuit. Maloney being an expert runner, soon came up to the fugitives, and impeded their progress until Madigan and another officer came up and re- captured them. The prisoners will be brought before the Magistrate in due course to answer for the offence. Harrison and Hackett are two young men but yet two very old offenders. The former was concerned in the Duim burglary case and gave evidence in favour of that prisone i r * wsllol^w sl101^ me * moe Hackett wao released frpw* gaolj after doing two months for forgery, ajm at the time of his attempted escapeho was incarcerated a similar period |q?
