SOCIAL CLUB AND DEBATING SOCIETY.
At the public meeting held on Tuesday evening last re the above, a number of persons interested were present including representatives from Waiorongomai and Waitoa. Mv Mills occupied the chair, and opened the proceedings by stating briefly the purpose for which they were assembled, and read the minutes of the previous preliminary meeting. The chairman next read the rules which had been drawn up by the committee appointed for that purpose, for the government of the Club and Society, viz. :—: — "That the instution be called the Te Aroha Social Club and Debating Society, and have for its objects — "To provide a suitable place of meeting in which converse may be held. "Arrange for debates on current events and questions of the day. "Lectures and mutual assistance in useful knowledge such as Mechanics, Mineralogy, Chemistry and other sciences ; and for such other purposos as may be determined upon by by-law from time to time." The Committee of Management shall include — President, Vico-President, Secretary, Treasurer. Any three members shall form a quorum. The Committee shall meet at least onct a month to transact any business requiring attention. The committee shall be elected at the annual meeting to be held the first Mon^ day in August in each year. I Any person may beeorae a member | subject to the approval of a majority of the committee. The entrance fee'was fixed at 2» 6d, and all members to pay Is per month contribution. The Chairman stated the fees had been fixed at so low a rate so that the cost of joining might not debar anyone from so doing, and as they hoped later on to be able to work the Society in conjunction with the Library, they expected the expenses would not be heavy, The following Committee of Management was appointed :—: — Messrs Pavitt (President), G. Wilson (Vice-President), Ahier (Treasurer)i Prazer (Secretary), Dobson, Menzies, Mills, Ferguson, Strange, Gavin and 'K. Parr with power to add to their number. '- ' , It was decided that Wednesday in each week be the evening set apart for public discussion. On noxt Wednesday evening Mr F. Strauge has undertaken to provide a subject. The meeting will be held in the Court House.
