THE SILVERTON MINES.

We (Otago Witness) have been shown a letter just received from the Silverton mines, which created so much talk not only in Australia, but also in New Zea- j l.md last year. The writer says; — '•There is very little doing in mining matters, except at Broker Hill, on aline) which extends about eight or nine miles. This neighbourhood was not much thought of until about three months ago. Seven months ago I could have bought a full share for £JO. £5800 is now the buying price. It is estimated by competent judges that there is £10,000 worth of ore in sight, and the quality is improving as the sinking proceeds. . . . The expectations of the people here are as great as ever, but I do not see how ' matters can improve until the railway reaches the border, and that will not be for two years yet. The Silverton Smelting Company has just been formed, and the smeltor is expected to be in full Mast in about three months. The fresh water is all done, and we are compelled to use [brackish water. Typhoid fryer is very prevalent, and has carried off a great number of young men during the past five months. The doctors do not seem to be able to check its ravages. ... A man of influence with capital could make money here yery fast. Tin place is very little known yet, and I have no hesitation in asserting that even the poorest claims I know,

with t, u» outlay of a fnv p<n ils aa I mansi,i>eroent, would make fortunes for the owners.
