PETITION RE TE AROHA TOWNSHIP LANDS.
With regard to the above petition, the contents of which we published in full last issue, and which was also discussed at the recent public meeting, no further steps have been taken to obtain signatures, and it is not now intended to forward same, at least not at preseut. *This change has come about in consequence of the terms suggested by Mr LipBey, as representing the owners, not being approved of. Mr Lipsey has drawn up a draft of the petition he >vould be willing to sign and have fortvur led in conjunction with thf j petition from residents, which is as follows :—: — H. Kenrick. E*q., Resident Magistrate and <J.»!<ifiyMs Warden, Te Arolnu Sut, -I have the honour to draw- your att.-ntma to the petition of a number of residents <»l Te Arofcu, in reference to the manner in which allotments in Lipseytown lire held b\ them, an I to respect! ully point out— l-t.As you are aWare that nnself and wife are only acting as trustees for two of our children, vix., Aimii' and Augustus Lf.xey* 2nd. We aie satisfied liati th« tenure should remain as tit {»re.-ent, hut at the tame time have tio objection to the reductions being removed, in uider that the tenants may be able to Hi-quire the freeholds, reserving to ill} self afii< u ife the right to dispose of, or wit.iboitl from bale, imy allotments as We may think fit, arid to fix the consideration. — i have the hoaour to be^ etc The Secretary of the Improvement Association yesterday morning forwarded to Mr Warden Kenrick a copy of the document, as submitted by Mr Lipsey, likewise stating that the conditions therein set out were nut such as the residents of the township sought for, «nd that they considered it would not be desirable or tair that the owners should have reserved to them the right to with hoM the freehold of any allotme/jt they might think fit, nor to fix the consider ition to be given for freeholds,— -it bein^ cmsilere 1 that the values should be fixed l>y arbitration. An effort will probably b • niiile to get the Government to make arrangements whereby, without having the township withdrawn from the goldfields, yet that those desirous of purchasing the freeholds of their property, an I Iwing able to agree as to price with the ovvuer-', may be able to do so.
