Melbourne, July 1. — A syndicate, shares in which are fully subscribed, has been formed for the purpose of equipping and despatching an expedition to New Gninea in soarch of gold, of which several excellent specimens were brought back from the island by Mr Kerry, of the recent " Age " New Guinea c jpedition. Melbourne, July I.— The examination of the Simpson's lload bank robbers was concluded yesterday, when the prisoners were all committed for trial at the July criminal sessions, bail being refused. ' Melbourne, July 1 — The Victorian yearly revenue returns are published today. The total revenue fot the 12 months ending June 30 is £6,290,000, being an increase on thepieceding year of £356,000. Among the departments showing an increase are : Customs, £150.000 ; excise, £60,000 ; railways, £121,000. The total revenue exceeded the Treasurer's estimate by £326,000. Melbourne, July 3. — The Address inReply to the Governor's Speech has been adopted by both Houses of the Legislature. Melbodrne, July 4. -The rush which took placo to SnowyJßiver Ranges owing to the reported discovery of gold has proved ii complete failure, as the anticipations of the prospectors have not been realised. A severe shock of earthquake occurred in Victoria yesterday. The disturbance was felt in Melbourne and many of the country towns. Melbourne, July 4. — It is announced that Messrs L Stophonson and Son have purcba&ed the business of Messrs McArthur, Brand, and Co., soft goods importers of this city, Melbourne, July 7.— Kauri timber, quiet demand. Adelaide, July 1. -The South Australian revenue returns give the total revenue for the past year as £2,150,(00, or £27 1 ,000 below the estimated amount. Customs duties show a decrease of £109,000. The Premier, Mr Downer, in his statement, announced that the deficiency of revenue below expenditure was £250,000, ai d the actual deficit at the end of the financial year £700,000. Adelaide, July 3. — Wheat, 3s 6d to 3s Sd per bushel ; tlour, town brands, £8 to £8 2s 6d ; country brands, £7 5s to £7 7s 6d. Sydney, July 3.— New Zealand wheat unchanged at 2s 8d j New Zealand oats are Id lower than last quotations, to clay's price being 2s Id ; maize remains at 2s lOd. The Sugar Company's prices are unaltered at £20. Sydney, July 3. — The Soudan contingent was formally disbanded to-day. The men, on receiving their discharge, were allowed two months' pay. Brisbane, July 2. — - The Queensland revenue returns for the past year wera published to-day. The receipts amount to £2,720,000, being an increase of £30,000 compared with the previous year, Tho revei ac is, however, belo\> the Treasurer's estimate, the deficiency being in receipts rom railways and lands. Brisbane, July 8. — Parliament was opened yesterday by His Excellency the Governor, Sir Anthony Musgrove. Tho speech refers to the promised bills for defraying expenses of members of Legislature ; for introducing the principle of local option in licensing matters; for shortening the duration of Parlia raent ; fo* 1 amending act referring to island labour traffic ; for conservation of water, and other important measures.
