SUDDEN DEATH.
A man named Matthew Callaghan died very suddenly in the neighbourhood of Mr 1), Goldie's timber mill on Tuesday 19tlu The poor fellow, who has been in very destitute circumstances for some time past, was employed by Mr Stacey to carry shavings across from the mill to his bakery during the afternoon. He was thus employed when he was suddenly taken ill, and was compelled to sit down on a stack of timber by the roadside. It was believed by those in the vicinity that he was in a fit, and -word was accordingly sent to the police. Constable Cahill arrived promptly, and believing the man to be very ill, he telephoned tor Dr. McKellar. The doctor was in attendance ten minutes afterwards, but Callaghan had expired in the meantime. The deceased had been out of work ior some time, and his effects were detained by the landlord of a boardinghouse adjoining the Albion Hotel for arrears of rent. His wife is dead, but three of his children are now in St. Mary's Orphanage, Nelson. One of his brothers is at present at Russell, and another at Kawakawa, while a third brother died at New Plymouth a short time ago from heart disease. The body is at the morgue, where an inquest was commenced at 2.30 p.m. today before Dr. Philson, Dr. McKellar was to make a post mortem examination, and it was expected that death would be found to have boon the result of heart disease. !
