A New Principle of Morality.
Iy an article on Kaiser William our morning contemporary puts forth the following startling doctrines ;—"; — " In order to carry out a great purpose, above all things an iron will is necessary, a freedom from those scruples that embarass ordinary minds. Men of this order must bo judged by the results of their achievements, not the processes by which they were attained.'* In these pithy and outspoken sentiments there is such a hightoned and sublime morality as cannot fail to recommond itself to all persons void of that useless encumbrance called a conscience The end, of course, sanctiGes the mean?. "Deceit," quoth St. Chrysostem, 1 ' is not deceit when used for a good purpose, but should be called good management." A creed founded on the above doctrines would produce politicians representing in character a kind of cross between Nero and Judas Iscariot It is a creed that has produced countless evils to humanity in the past, and merits theirs coma id detestation now and ever.
