TERRORISM IN RUSSIA. Nihilism More Dangerous than Ever— Fierce Persecution of the Jews.
i London, "Dec. 24. — The Paris correspondent 1 of the " Times," in an article on the present • state of Russia, says : — "Count Tolstoi, the ' Russian Minister of the Interior, is chiefly L engaged in the discovery and prosecution 1 of Nihilists. No sooner has one society of 1 Nihilists been suppressed than another > springs up, Count Tolstoi is inundated with > threats of death. He rarely attends the meetings of tho Council. Whenever he stirs out it costs 500 roubles for extra police protectibn. V\ hile Nihilism is more 1 dangerous than ever, the persecution of the J ows is as as fierco as it was a few years 1 ago, when the European proas boiled with ' indignation at the anti-Semitic outrages [ which disgraced Russia. The great bankers, especially those of {German nationality, who 1 wero previously interested in giving wide publicity to the outrages with a view to preventing the investment of capital in Ku&sia, arc now inclined to subsidise the press to preserve silence. They take this cour^o for the purpose of preverting the impairment of European confidence in Russian financo, the condition of which at present is nofc brilliant. It is suffering from the diiliculty experienced at present in collecting the revonue, from the persistonfc American competition in the grain trade, and from the ruinous expense of the Russian adyanco on Mcrv Furthermore, the protective system which the Moscow manufacturers obtained against Silesian competition has caused the Silesians to establish hundreds of factories in Russian Poland. In these factories German operatives are employed, and the Silesians are thereby enabled to supply the Moscow market with goods at pricos from 5 to 10 per cent, under tho prices demanded by the Moscow manufacturers for precisely similar articles. Despotism is increasing, and the press is coorced into silence. Russia is more and more ignoring liberal ideas, and is paving the way to a tremendous explosion." Tho London correspondent of the "Novoe Vromya" alleges that a complete organisation of Russian Nihilists exists under the guise of an export firm within the precincts of tho city of Ixmdon, England, and is exporting to Russia criminal documents and explosives. The "Times" correspondent at St. Petersfa ui-g says this confirms the already fixed conviction of a number of influential Russians, who, presumably, have means of knowing of the existence of such an organisation,
