The fruit importers of Wellington are said to be sanguine that the restrictions on the importation of fruit to the colony will be removed 'immediately upon Hon. Mr Stout's return to the Empire City, The tone of Hon. Mr Larnach, in receiving a deputation of fruit importers there yesterday, was not such as to justify these expectations. He said he would convey the views of the deputation to his colleagues. Personally he was opposed to removing the restrictions, as he believed that disease might be transmitted not only through grapes, but also by the importation of raisins. Communications that the Government had received from the Governments of Australian colonies showed that whereas Adelaide is clean, Victoria and Sydney were still infected, and he thought a danger of infection to New Zealand might arise if grapes were shipped at Melbourne for this colony. He considered that people should be glad of restrictions, as they tended to create an industry. However, he promised to confer with his colleagues and forward their decision. The Presbyterian Synod of Otago has had its attention drawn, not a moment too soon, to a scandal in connection with the church in that province. j At the meeting of the Synod yesterday at .Dunedin, roports on the state of religion and temperance w^re considered, and in connection with the latter the Synod expressed its emphatic disapproval of allowing churoh property to be used for the existence of licensed houses for the sale of drink, and strongly recommended the Church Property Board to prevent lessees from carrying on hotel business. R. S. Waterhouse, an absconding Wellington merohant, was lately in Sydney, but has left that city for parts unknown. He is supposed to have had between £2,000 and £3,000 in caßh with him when he levanted, from Wellington,
