DROWNING AT PONSONBY. Auckland, January 14.

Thomas Barron, the well-known waterman, was passing Shelly Beach, Ponsonby, about 8.30 thia morning, when ho found the dead body of a man quite naked floating in the water. He took the body into his boat, and handed it over to the water police at Queen-street Wharf. Thence it was conveyed to the Morgue, being unidentified, to there await further proceedings. The body had only been in the water a short time, probably about two hours, and is most likely that of some unfortunato bather, who had met with a mishap while in the water off Shelly Beach this morning. The body is that of a man about 45 years of age, sft. sJin. in height, slender build, fair complexion, hazel eyes, grey hair, whiskers and moustache, and two front toeth are missing from the lower jaw. The body was identified late this afternoon as that of John Henry Benjamin Foreman, a resident of Ponsonby, 53 years of age. He was formerly employed as gardener by the City Council, and was seen alive between 1 tnd 2 p.m. yesterday. Deceased leaves a wife, from whom he has lived separate for the last 19 years. An inquest will bo held to-morrow.
