MATAKOHE.
A meeting of the ratepayers was held in Maiakohe Hall on Decom'ber 27, ISSI, to discuss the advisability of County and Road Board separation. Mr Isbe-<tor occupied the chair, and laid the business before tho meeting. After considerable discussion, in which the matter was* well ventilated, it was unanimously agreed that it would be against the interest of this district to favour county separation under the proposed ne»v boundaries, and a resolution was passed requesting the Chairman of tho Highway Board to send a memorial to the Chairman of tho Hobson Count}' Council setting forth boundaries acceptable to tho ratepayers of this district. The subject of Road Board separation was thon laid before the meeting. Tho Chair man read a copy of Messrs Hesketh and Richmond's letter to the Chairman of tho Ilobson County Council ro petition of ratepayers of Tokatoka, praying for separation from Matakohe Highway Board, and the formation of a Road Board District at Tokatoka, including Omaru ; also tho petition of ratepayers of Matakohe, proposing the separat ion of Omaru from Matakohe. On tho motion of Mr John Kirkden, it was unanimously agreed that the Road Board be requested to oppose the separation of Omaru from Matakohe, and to employ legal assistance if necessary. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded tho business of tho meeting. A tea meeting in connection with tho Matakohe Wesleyan Society was hold on Now Year's Day in the Public Hall, Matakohe, when upwards of 130 people sat down to an excellent tea, kindly provided by Mesdaines R. C. Smith, E. Pheasant, G. Moulder, E Cooksey, and Miss Kintoul. After tea the young people were engaged in games until sundown, when all repaired to tho hall. The Rev. Mr GrilFm being called to the chair, opened tho meeting by engaging in prayer, after which the following programme was gone through : — "I'm a Soldier of tho Ciops," by the choir; an address by tho Rev. Mr Griftin, " Eve's Lamentation ;" solo by Mrs Moulder; "Sabbath Bells," choir; an address by Mr Wilson, of Paparoa ; " Keep on Praying," solo and chorus, Miss Yaliio ; " Rejoice in tho Lord," by the choir ; an address by Mr Redfern ; " Vc-per Hymn," solo and chorus, Miss Ovens ; " Who are the Reapers?' choir. After this Mr G. Cliff proposed a vote of thanks to the ladies who had provided trays ; also to the choir and othei s who had kindly assisted in the musical part of theentertainment. Seconded by Mr Trounson. Mr Pheasant responded on behalf of the ladies and tho choir, and said that he would take this opportunity of proposing a vote of thanks to Mrs Moulder for kindly presiding at the harmonium during services, which was hoartily seconded by the Rev. Mr Griffin. The meeting thon accorded a voto of thanks to the chair, and concluded by singing the Doxology. The night being clear and pleasant, all returned to their sevei'al homes well pleased with the manner in which they had spent New Year's Day. — [Communicated.]
