SPOUTING NEWS. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB SUMMER MEETING.
First Day. (From twe AucLland •• Star," December 27. ) The summer racing carnival of the Auckland Racing Club was inaugurated yesterday, and though the weather was unfavourable, the attendance was one of the largest yet seen on the Ellerslie course. Th 9 heavy rain thr.t hud fallen on Wednesday left the turf very sfcppery, and at the back of the course, near the cutting, *he 11 going "was very heavy. Thenew totalisator arrangements were excellent and the terrible rush and crush of former gathering* was avoided. In several of the races the tickets were £2, and this seems to havo had the effect of curtailing speculation. Perhaps the Club in future will see that it will be to their advantage to make a uniform charge of £1. The train ran at frequent intervals, but the railway arrangement were far from perfect, and there was a great deal of grumbling. The racing was, on the whole, good, but they resulted mostly in a series of surprises. The scratching ot Y\ clcorae Jack an hour before the Cup race excited considerable comment. Mr Pilbrow accompanied the scratching with a letter to the stewards, stating that an impression had got abroad that if Administrator won, his horse was not >\ anted. Some members ot the Club had stated that Welcome Jack would be watched carefully, and if theie was- the slightest g»ound for suspicion of the hoi>c not being ridden out, he would be disqualified. He had intended to start Welcome Jack and win if he coukt, but owing to the state of the course, coupled with the fact that his horse was bad in heavy going, as well as the rumours that had prevailed, he found the only alternative was to scratch his horso. The result of the Cup ci'eated genuine enthusiasm, and the great majority of the sporting public expressed deiight at the manner in which the "pot "of the clever party had been upset. There was a large number of bookmakers in the paddock, and very fair odds were laid — in some instances the odds being better for backers than the totalisator dividends. The following are the details of the several events : — Maiden Plate of lOOsovs., with a sweep stakes of 3sovs. each to go to second horse. For three-year-olds and upwards. Weight for age. In the cutting, Vortex fell back, Linda being taken to the front, with Revolver and Cast Ashore in close attendance. The tiio raced together for about one furlong, when Linda came away, and won as she liked by several lengths— Revolver, who swerved two or three times in the straight, being second, and Cast Ashore four lengths off, third. Torpedo, who was lame when he started, broke down, and The Clown pulled up w hen half the distance had been traversed. Time, 2.53|. Totalisator dividend, £Q 7s.
