PROPOSED INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION. Government Arranging for a Big Show at Wellington. Wellington, November 22.
A DEPUTATION, collating Of Me-:SIS IIMICV, Newman, Johnston, and Beetham, M.H.R.'s, T. K. McDonald, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, and twenty other gentlemen, principally local manufacturers, ■waited on the C'olonuii Treasurer yesterday respecting the Govern ment proposals re the Industrial Exhibition. Sir Julius Vogel said the intention wa* to hold the Exhibition about August Ist, and make it a thoioughly colonial one. Ho did not think LI, OOO would covor the cost, but the extra amount should not be largely over that amount Fie conned the hearty cooperation of manufacturer^, and would endeavour to gi\e the nece.-^aiy space for exhibits, of com so using the discrimination necessary in all exhibitions of this nature. It is intended to takead vantage ol the Industrial Associations established in Auckland, Dunedin, and Clm>-tchureh, the Committee of which ■would bo tlie medium between the executive body of exhibition and the manufacturers, and give opinion* a* to the nature of exhibits, etc. A gentleman (Mr Colli-) who had large experience in connection with exhibitions in England and Au&tialia was aheady in New Zealand, and was engaged in stimulating indu-tiies. Cariiage to and from the exhibition would be free, and the Govern ment hoped to defray a portion of the cost of fittings. Government would direct the expenditure. The duties of the Committee would be to take a share in the allotment of space, arranging ceiemomals and taking part in the appointment of juiors-. The latter, Sir Julius said, was a very important question, and great caie would have to be exercised in their selection so as to give every satisfaction to exhibitors. Go\ernment intended to attach to a ] l classes a gold medal, which was to be awaided in cases of paiticular merit which showed that indu*tiie*> could be economically puisued in the colony, and that the manufacturer had interested himself in fostering local in dustry. I'ei-ons who were awarded this gold medal would be entitled to nominate either a sun, daughter, niece, or nephew tor a scholaiship from a secondary school to the highest colonial -chulai-.hip-> for eight years, and Government hoped this would be an incentive to manufacturers. The Exhibition would be dhided into live dep-ut-ments, \ i/,. :- Fabric?, &c , fisheries, &c., machinery, ifec., elementary products, c\:c., mining apparatus, &c.
