GENERAL SUMMARY.
Several thousand persons joined iv the demonstration at Neale, County Mayo, on September 28, favouring the establishment of branch leagues. Several members of the House of Commons addressed the meeting. Mr Domey, of Chicago, also presented his views to the vast assemblage. The Marquis De Serpa and. Admiral Pinto are about to lead a Portuguese expedition to explore the country between Mozambique and Lake Nyassa, in south-east Africa. The expedition will be accompanied by 100 Zulus and 250 carriers. Catania, Italy, has been visited by another cyclone. Thirty persons were killed. King Humbert has sent £400 for the relief of the sufferers. Henry Stanley is going to Berlin, probably for a conference with Bismarck on Congo affairs. The Imperial Commission appointed by the German Government to inquire into the causes which lead to the extensive damage done to vines in wine-growing districts of the Rhine by phylloxera, left Berlin, to-day
for the scone of their investigations. The parasite is rapidly spreading in all directions, and causing immense damage to growing vines throughout the district to be visited by the members of the commission. On the opening of Parliament a commission will be appointed to inquire into the condition of the navy, and the Admiralty will ask for an increased grant for shipbuilding, to enable it to give orders to private firms for the construction of swift heavy-armoured and light-armored vessels. A bomb was exploded at the window of the officer s room of the gendarmes barracks, at St. Etienna, about midnight. The windows and furniture were wrecked but fortunately nobody was hurt. Nine anarchists were arrested this morning. A mine has been discovered in a cellar at Kronovenski, on Prospoct-street, directly against the Ravelin of the St. Peter and St. Paul fortress. Four Russians and three foreigners have been arrested on account of the discovery. The Tory election agents throughout the country, in reporting to hoadquarters in London as to the effect of the Government's redistribution scheme, declare that it will be destructive to the fortunes of the party.
