Christciiurcii, Tuesday. TitK Metropolitan Race Meeting commenced to-day, undermost unfavourable conditions. There is a cold driving wind prevailing from the south ■ west, with occasional showers of hail and rain. The course is very heavy, and the going as bad as it could be. Considering the weather, there is a good attendance. The Free Handicap, a sweepstakes of 3 govs. each, with 200 soys. added. One mile. Mr J. Pilbrow's Mata, Gst. (Thwaites) ... 1 Mr P. Vanguard and Nelson were quickest on their legs, and wore first to show in front, attended closely by Tim Whiffler and Lady Evelyn. On settling down Tim Whiiller was taken to the front, and led into the straight, with Turquoise on his quarters, and Lady Evelyn leading the others. As they swept past the stand, Tim Whiffler and Turquoise were on even terms, two lengths ahead of Lady Evelyn, after whom came Vanguard, the Poet, Welcome Jack, Ike, and Nelson, while Sou-wester and Leodogran brought up the rear. At Cutt's Tim Whiffler and Tux*quoise were still together, but near the mile post the latter passed Tim WhifHer. At Ford's The Poet came through, but soon fell back again. On passing the half-mile post Leonora came with a rush, taking second position at Turquoise's girths. As the bend was rounded, Vanguard, falling a length away, was third. When nearly in the straight Derritt took Vanguard to the front, while Turquoise fell back beaten. Kudings also called on Ike, but Vanguard held his own to the finish, j and won, hard held, by three lengths from Leonora, who was ten lengths in front of j Ike, after whom came Nelson, Welcome j Jack, Turquoise, Leodogran, The Poet, Lady Evelyn, July, and Tim Whiffler, whipping in the field. Time, 3mins. 49.4 sees. Totalisator dividends : Insiiio, £5 Is Gd ; outside, £2 14s 6d. The Hurdle Race Handicap, of 100 soys., with a sweepstakes of 5 eovs. each, to go to the second horse. Melbourne, Monday. A protest has been lodged against Rufus, the winner of the Victoria Derby, pn the ground that he was wrongly nominated. The stewards have not yet given any decision in the matter.
