Mr Gordon's eh f Sandal, by Winterlake—lnstep 1 Mr Tothill's br f Gratitude, by Countryman — Serenity 2 Twelve horses started. Sandal won easily. Time, 1.50^ The result of the event has evidently been a " turn-up," for Gratitude in all probability started favourite. Sandal had not much previous form to recommend her, for out of the 17 times she started last season, only thrice were her colours borne to victory. Her first win was the Flying Stakes, about half-a-mile, at the Melbourne Hunt Club Meeting in November last, when, with 7st 51b in the saddle, she put down Bnnne Fortune (7st 51b), Falkirk (7st 101b), Pan (78t 101b), and a few others, in 53£ seconds. ! She then went back to South Australia, and I at Gawler carried Bst 101b to the front for the December Stakes, five furlongs, in 1.74. Then at the Adelaide Racing Club New Year's Day Meeting she won the Two-year-old Handicap, six furlongs, 9st 31b, beating Senator (Bst 51b), The Baron (Bst 31b), and others, in 1.19. Her first effort this season was in the S.A.J.C. Derby, when she got second to Gratitude, Helene being third. Both Sandal and Gratitude are engaged in the V.R.C. Derby. The following table shows the previous winners of the Caulfield Guineas :—
