Melbourne, October 9.— The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) held their first wool sale for the season this afternoon, when the attendance of British, foreign, American, and colonial wool buyers was extremely largo. The catalogue comprised 1,310 bales, the bulk of the lots offered being medium and inferior wools, and in no way representative of the new clip. Tho bidding was spirited throughout, 1,200 bales being disposod of under the hammer. For scoured wools an especially firm and active demand was experienced, and parcels sold up to 20d. Greasy merino realised to lOhd, and greasy crossbreds to 9 fd. Melbourne, October 10. — Another death has occuied from small-pox-will leave here almost immediately for New Guinea. Melbourne, October 11.— Messrs Service and Griiliths (Premier of Queensland) have received telegrams intimating that the Imperial Government will shortly instruct the Commodore ot the Australian station to proclaim a British protector-ate over the south-east portion of New Guinea and adjacent islands. Melhoukne, October 11. — The National Mortgage and Agency Company, New Zealand (Limited), sold yesterday 204,000 feet of kauri timber at an average price for heavy logs of 14s 6d per 100 feet super. The following quotations ruled : — Sawn flitches, 14s 9d ; sawn boards, 1-inch, 15s 6d ; ditto, 1£ to 3-inch, 15s 9d. These were for inferior qualities. Dressed boards, realised, for J-inch, 22s per 100 feet lineal ; 4 by H-, 7s lOd ; sawn pickets per 1,000, 265. A firm and active demand was experienced. Sydney, October 10. — An agreement between the Legislative Council and the Assembly has been arrived at regarding the amendments to the Land Bill, and it is expected the measures will become law next week. Sydney, October 15.— The Land Bill has now finally passed both Houses of Parliament. Resolutions on the subject of Pacific annexation will come up for discussion in the Assembly immediately.
