AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, September 4.

The Small-pox Outbreak. The small-pox outbreak caused a good deal of uneasiness, but the precautions taken by the health authorities will, it is hoped, prevent its further spread. The fine dry weather is favourable, whereas rain would be unfavourable at the present time. The last case in William-street is distinctly traceable to the Orient Ilotel, where the patient had been drinking some time previous. It is probable the Government will prosecute Dr. Erckler for not having reported the disease. All the patients are doing well. The nomination of Mr Walter Scott, of Merton and Balliol, to the Chair of Classics at Sydney University, has been confirmed. The prospectus has been issued of tho Fisheries Improvement Company, with a capital of ten thousand pounds, for prosecuting a plan of deep-sea fishing.

Sculling Match. The sculling match between Robert Edwards, of Victoria, and Neil Matterson, of Clarence .River, for £100 a sido, Avluch took place on the Paramatta champion course on August 22nd, ended in an easy victory for Matterson. The men got away at a fast pace. Edwards having won the tosp, took the south bank and ran close in shore, pulling ahead of his opponent, and obtained a lead of a length. He rowed a long, steady, beautifully clean stroke, while Matterson showed more exertion in his movements, but rowed very strong. His rate was above thirty-two to tho minute for some distance. Matterson rowed in a determined fashion, and at the mile beacon both boats wore almost touching, tho mile being done in 7min. 4osec. Matterson then drew up level, and a\ ithin 100 yards pa3t the beacon had taken a full length to the go d. It becamo evident that Edwards was giving up the struggle, and in anothor 100 yardb Matterson had increased his lead to three i lengths, still rowing a strong, steady stroke. Edwards kept up his long even swing, but there was no go in it. 'At Putney Point Matterson was six lengths ahead, and the race was apparently over. Edwards made an effort at Carbarita Point, but it was no use, and again enlivened up at One Man Wharf ; but he could not reduce the great gap between the boats. Matterson increased his lead towards the finish, and passed the winning-post ith a lead of nearly nine lengths in 23min. 42secs. There was practically no racing after Edwards Avas passed at the end of the first mile. The next match of interest is between Brett and Sharland, both of whom are showing very good form. Brisbane, September 4. | ; It is stated that the Commodoro has forwarded to the Colonial Secretary a despatch embodying a large number of complaints in connection with the South Sea recruiting trade. Sir Thomas Mcllwraith has intimated his intention of taki -q a firm stand on the Immigration Act Amendment Bill. He was certain that the working men, when they grasped the situation, would not endorse the action of tho Government.
