Melbourne, September 6. Mr Service, Premier, has telegraphed to the Agent-General at London, urging the necessity of expediting the annexation of New Guinea, in view of the colonising actively now manifest on the part of Germany and Austria. Melbourne, Sept. 9. — More cases of small-pox are reported from various places in the country. Sydney, September 5. — All the small-pox patients are progressing favourably. Professor Liversidge, of the Sydney University, states that the telegram sent to the meeting of the British Association at Montreal was to the following effect : — "Mr Cildwell finds that the monotrematous mammals of Australia are oviparous, but that their ovum is mesoblastic, or only partially germinal." Sydney, Sept. B.— Dr. Moran, the Roman Catholic Archbishop-designate of Sydney, arrived to day, and was accorded a great reception by large crowds who had assembled to welcome him. Addresses of welcome were presented, and a special service was held at the Cathedral.
Sydney, September 10. The final arrangements have been concluded for a sculling match between Hanlan and Clifford, to take place in February next. The stakes are £500 a-side. Mr Deeble has now, on behalf of Beach, stated that the latter would not now agree to row the proposed match with Hanlan in May next, but would row the winner of the February match. Adelaide, Sept. s.— The" House of Assembly has- adopted the resolutions of the Sydney Convention regarding the proposed Federal Council, and will on Tuesday next;
vote an address to the Queen concerning the same. Adelaide, September B.— A serious outrage has been committed in the Northern Territory by a tribe of blacks, who attacked a party of miners, killing one and wounding two dangerously. The Duke of Manchester, who is visiting the Northern Territory, was only twenty miles from the scone of the outrage at the time.
