Mr Service, Premier, has telegraphed to the Agent-General at London, urging the necessity of expediting the annexation of New Guinea, in view of the colonising actively now manifest on the part of Germany and Austria. Melbourne, Sept. 9. — More cases of small-pox are reported from various places in the country. Sydney, September 5. — All the small-pox patients are progressing favourably. Professor Liversidge, of the Sydney University, states that the telegram sent to the meeting of the British Association at Montreal was to the following effect : — "Mr Cildwell finds that the monotrematous mammals of Australia are oviparous, but that their ovum is mesoblastic, or only partially germinal." The Duke of Manchester, who is visiting the Northern Territory, was only twenty miles from the scone of the outrage at the time.
