A CATION TO "SWEEP INVESTORS.

Ai eged 'Bogus" Consultation. The large proportion of the public who take a speculative interest in racing " consultations," particularly in those upon the Melbourne Cup, are so liable to be made the dupes of designing kna\cs that the utmost circumspection is called for on their part. In lespect to one "sweep" which is being organised outside the colony there are rumouis in currency which, to say the least, are calculated to raise suspicion as to its genuineness. It seems that a gentleman recently returned from Sydney met there Mr F. Archard. formerly ot the Britomart Hotel, who assured him that the organiser of a £50,000 consultation in that city was no less a person than the celebrated Theodore Brown, the remembrance of whose tl o,ooo Melbourne Cup Sweep and Furniture Art Union of ISSI can hardly yet have faded from the minds of the Auckland public. It is alleged that the versatile Theodore is now " i-unning" a warehouse in Sydney under an assumed name, and that the name attached to his "consultation" advertisemei.ts is that of his clerk. Of course it is quite possible that Mr Brown's intentions are perfectly just and honourable, but a knowledge of his local career will not tend to assure the confidence of his constituents. There is, at any rate, need for caution, more esj ecjally as wo understand, that some £50 has already gone from Auckland for investment in the " sweep " referred to.
