MINING NEWS.
New Find. — There is not much change to report iv tne general appearance of the mine. The low level workings continue to look healthy. In the drive northward tne reef has for a few feet been rather smaller than usual, hut the quartz is of much the same quality as before. Tne south end shows a promising iode about four feet in width. Both iv the leading slope and in the one loilo wing ifc the re^f is of a good size, and the stone being got out is of excellent grade. Tue workings in the Arizona level prc&eut the same satisfactory appearance, and in the several stopes, as well as in the drive, the quantity of crushing stuff is as large as usual. There has been during tbe week a discovery of gold in a fresh place in the upper part of the claim. The vein from which it was obtained is on the eastern side of the larger lode, and is about two feet in width. Some of the quartz broken down is of first-class quality, and it is likely that the development of this vein will largely extend the duration of the workings in that portion of the mine. - Colonist. — A contract hns been let for driving 10U feet southward in the low level, and the opening up of the reef in thut direction will be pushed on with all possible despatch. The rise and winze are now nearly connected, and when this done oilier works in the low level will be commenced. Sloping is going biiskly on in Luc upper blocks. Operations there have s iowm tnat a considerable portion ol the reef about the quality of whieu some doubts were eutertaiuud is likely to yield much better than was expected, and will Keep up the supply of ei us. ting sl.uff for i ionger perioi than was anticipated. Canadian — Work underground is going on as usual. Stoping is at present confined to Williums's lode, horn which a. fair supply of stuff is !>ein:<gut. The driving of the cross-cufc, to cub that lode in tae low level, has been interrupted during the week, and the vein, whica wua expected to have been m hand by this time, has not yet been touched, but ifc will probably be reached in a day or two. Prkmiek. — It is satisfactory to note that an effort is at last being made to bring this mine again into repute. Operations were resumed a short time
<ince undor the tnanairemmit of MiFohn Gohlsworthy, whose lou^f experi•nce and skill in mmiijo- matters warrant he hope that un ler his charge the former prestige of th» claim will be in .'orne (leg-ree rjstorcl. It is not intrude I I at present to do anything upon thp^lole ■'onnerly worked, and attention 'will- for i time be wholly given to the prospecting of the main reef, which runs ri^ht Hirouo-h the property, and which may ho said to be almost untried. The reef crops out on the .surface here and there •V)r sonift hundreds of feet, and has many of the features that characterise it in the Colonist and other claims. The part, now being prospected is on the eastern side of what is known as the big- buck reef, and a little way south of its junction with the old Premier lode. The look of things is at present very encouraging, the quartz being of a most kindly description, and occasionally yielding a fair show of gold when pounded. There are strong reasons for -supposing that payable stone will ere long be dropped upon, and the excellent yiel Is which were for a time obtained from the old workings close by, give strength to tho supposition. Although tho high expectations that were once entertained regarding this mine may not ho quite fulfilled, there are still fair grounds for believing thnt it will again occupy an important position on the hVld, and it. will afford general satisfaction when the claim once more takes rank as a payable gold producer. Diamond Gully. — Work is going on <n tne block over the old level, and in a short time the manager will he in a position to forward regular supplies of sUiff to the battery. The tenders for a hopper and shoot to connect the mine with the, County tramway will be opened to-day, and the erection will be at once proceeded with. Waiorongomai. — Preparations are now completed for sending quartz to the mill, and as scon as the stampers can be obtained, crushing will be commenced. There is nothing of importance to record concerning the workings underground. May Qubkn. — Excellent stone is still being got from the hanging wall portion of the reef where it has been opened up below the tramway. The full width of the lode is some four or five feet, but the gold has hitherto been chiefly confined to the portion named. A ton or so of stuff will be treated at the battery on Monday, and a good return is expected from it. There will shortly bo a trial crushing of 10 or 12 tons from the main body of the reef. Inverness. — The extension of the drire ou the reef in the upper level has been suspended, in order that a tramway may be laid. A.s soon as this is done work will be resumed in the face. Stoping is going on as usual, and during the week some very fair stone has been broken down. The final cleaning up of the crushing at the battery on Monday is expected to give a good payable return. Lucky Hit. — The intermediate drive is now in nearly 50 feet, and about eight feet more will carry it under the winze from the level above. A rise will then be put up,.and as soon as the two are connected, stuff will be sent to the batter y for trial.
