ELECTION NOTES.

Newton. — Mr C. DoLautour announces his candidature for this district in opposition to Mr Peacock. The irrepressible Garrard is still in the field. Waitemata. — All attempts to induce an Opposition candidate to take the Held against Mr W. J. Hurst have so far failed, and that gentleman seems likely to have a "walk over." Bay of Islands. — Mr Gannon's address to thq electors of this district is issued. Mr Hobbs will address the electors of Russell on Saturday night. He is meeting with strong support, and will poll heavily. Franklin North. — Mr Buckland ad dressed a meeting of electors at Fakuranga on Saturday last, and received a unanimous vote of confidonco. Last night, Major Marris spoke at Papakura Hall, when there were about 100 electors present, Mr J. B. Young presiding. After the candidate- had explained his views, he was asked several questions, to which he gave satisfactory replies. The meeting then unanimously passed him a vote of thanks for past services, and of confidence in him for the future. City North. — On account of the teetotal proclivities of Mr Joseph Newman, the accepted Government candidate for City North, it is on the cards that Mr H. McIlhone, President of the Licensed Victuallers' Association, will be brought out in opposition to him. Parnell.— We are informed that Mr F. G. Clayton has resolved not to contest this seat against the former member, Mr Moss. Parnell. — Captain Brackenbury is spoken of as a possible candidate for the representation of this district. Some Parnell electors are getting up a requisition asking Mr R. Fitzgerald, of Hobson Park, to place himself in nomination and address them at the district hall. Waipa. — Our own correspondent at Raglan telegraphs :—" Mr Lake opened the Waipa election campaign here last night, when he was favoured with a very successful meeting, the attendance being large. He expressed himself in favour of the native policy of the present Government, and would support Mr Bryce in the pre-emptive right, but considered that the exercise of the right should be carefully watched. On the question of education, he was in favour of the free and secular system up to the fourth standard ; education over that to be solfsupporting. As to the trunk line of railway, he would support either line — by Stratford or Marton. He thought that North Island members should go to Wellington combined on this matter. He did not believe in Sir Julius Vogel. He considered that Mr F. A. Whitaker, having got out of accord with his constituents, acted becomingly in withdrawing from the contest. At the conclusion of his speech, the candidate, in reply to questions, stated that he would be in favour of a railway or any other project for the benefit of Raglan District. He was in favour of the property tax as against the income tax, and did not believe in federation. A message was posted up here yesterday from Major Jackson to the effect that he was adopted as the Government candidate." Rodney. — On Monday night Mr Moat addressed the electors at Aratapu, Mr Ludlow presiding. At the close of an able address the candidate received a vote of thanks, the motion for a vote of confidence being defeated by a small majority. Rodney. — Our own correspondent wires from Aratapu: — "Mr Moat addressed the electors here last night. There "« as a large attendance, and great interest was shown. A vote of thanks was carried, as most of his supporters did not think it fair to give a vote of confidence until Mr Wilson, the other candidate, had been heard. It is believed here that the Government supporters will be elected." Franklin South. — At Waiuku, on SaturjJ day night, Mr Hamlin addressed a meeting of electors, and was accorded a unanimous vote of confidence. Bay of Islands. — Mr Hobbs got a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence from the electors at Herd's Point on Monday | night. The Temperance Platform. — The Temperance bodies in Auckland have draw n up a circular of the policy which they wish I candidates to pursue with regard to the Licensing Act. It embraces the retention of the present law, popular annual election of licensing committees, abolition of barmaids, and suppression of bars in connection with hotels. The Orange Platform. — The Executive and Political Committee of the Orange ' Society a&k candidates to oppose grants to denominational schools, to reduce grants to Orphan Homes connected with any religious body when the cost of such Homes is in excess of Government institutions, to maintain the present subdivision of city electorates, and to support nominated immigration only, one halt of the immigrants to be English and the other half in the proportion of three Scotch and four Irish.

East Coast Election.— There are various ■ways in which a sharp lawyer can embarra s s his opponent at an election, and Mr Rees has hit upon one. He has filed an indictment against Mr Locke for corrupt practices, alleging that Mr Locke paid moneys outside and beyond the exceptions authorised by the first and second schedule of the Corrupt Practices Prevention Act, &uch as being an indictable offence.
