A STABBING CASE. Serious Condition of the Wounded Man. (From the Auckland " Star," June 27.)
A man named John Brown was brought up at the Police Court this morning and remanded on the serious charge of stabbing a fishmonger on tho right breast with a knife. Joseph Welling, a fishmonger, states that at 11.50 last night he was at the bar of the Imperial Hotel. The accused was also there. "Welling accused Brown of being a loafer after free drinks. Brown became very angry, and threatened to strike him. Welling pushed Brown, and he fell. On rising-, Brown struck Welling on the head with a stick. A scuflle ensued, and the accused drew a knife and stabbed Welling on the right breast. The barman, James Lefevre, made a similar statement, and sent for the police. Constable Carroll came and arrested Brown, and took possession of the knife, and, considering that Welling had been seriously wounded j as the wound bled copiously, he procured one of Crowthers vans and conveyed the wounded man to the Hospital, where he was attended to by Dr. Bond. It appears that both men were under the, influence of drink.
