FIRE AND NARROW ESCAPE.

Hamilton, June 21. .Shortly afl or I en o'clock Jastnight a lire broko out, in I. ho residence of Mr J. A. 8011, Victoriastroct, through the bursting of a kcrosinc lamp, winch was being carried from ono room to another by liis little daughter. Some ohildroJi Avero sleeping in tlie lioiiso at the lime, but wero ssivpd before the fire had time to spread. Almost everything elso was destroyed. The house was the properly of Mr Hume, a local bank manager.

In the April number of "The Sword and Trowel," tho Rev. C. 11. Spurgeon contradicts the report, which recently went the round of tho papers, to the effect that a fortune had been bequeathed him by a Leicester admirer. He says in allusion to a recent illness ; "While we were still confined to the house, we received the news, m Inch in various forms has been published in the newspapers, of a legacy loft by a Leicester gentleman. Under the provisions of his will the Orphanago will receivo £1,000, but there id no truth in the statement that * largo fortune has boon bequeathed to Mr Spurgcon personally. The residue of the testator's personal estate goes to the Leicester infirmary, while his real estate is charged with the payment of debts, funeral and testamentary expenses, and certain legacies. All that can be said at present is that there will probably be a balance to come to Mr Spurgeon." The writer thence goes on, and in characteristic style, to remark that, had tho rumour been correct;, ho should havo been able to dispose of the largest amount with ease, since ho has just now several localities before him in which churches ought to be formed and places of worship erected ; but he had not the means of aid.
