STRANGE INHUMANITY. A DAUGHTER LEFT TO DIE AT HER MOTHER'S DOOR. (From the Anckland "Star," June 14.)
One of the most shocking cases of in humanity that has come under our notice in Auckland is now engaging the attention of the local police authorities, While Constable Kelso was on duty in Queen -.street about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, it was reported to him that a woman was lying in Lome-street in a dying condition, lie proceeded without delay to the place indicated, and found a woman named Ellen Curtis on a vacant section of ground off Lome-street. She was lying prostrate, and there was no doubt concerning her debilitated condition. In reply to the questions put by the constable, she'said she had been lying there from eleven o'clock on the previous night, or, in other words, about sixteen hours. Hor mother, who was living close by, would not take her in, and declined to have anything to do with her. The unfortunate creature also said she had been living for some months past on an oyster boat with a man named Arthur Kirk, but that when she was taken ill, he abandoned her, and left her to find help where she might. The matter having baen reported at head-quarters, the constable was instructed to procure a cab, and have the women conveyed to the Hospital, and this he did. Dr Bond was unable to say at the time what was really the matter with the woman, but he considered her to be in a very low state. We learn by telephone from the Hospital this afternoon that the woman is still in a very low state, but her recovery is expected.
