AUCKLAND INDUSTRIES.
At a meeting of the Cliristchurch Industrial Association, the President (Mr Howland) said that since lie h.id met them before he had visited the North Island and had taken the opportunity of visiting many of the local industries, with which he was ranch pleased. With regard to the timber trade in Auckland, he might say that some 20' »0 hands were employed (as many as 1000 being in the employ of a single firm), and the amount p:iid came up to £164,000 per annum. As to the gum industry, there was about eighty tons of gitm coming into Auckland weekly, and shipped away. The Auckland Fibre Company had about 100 bauds and 100 machines. The product used was mostly New Zealand flax for reaper and binder twine. In the ship building trade Auckland was very busy, about 100 hands being employed. In the Phoenix Foundry, where about 200 hands were employed, they made most of the iron steamers in Auckland and engined them. He had visited the Onehunga Ironworks, where they were busily employed with buildings. The promoters hud great hopes of the industry He had seen a number of pigs made from the sand, which had the property of not rusting. The glassworks were also visited, and he had promised to send them some ICaiapoi sand to manufacture soi»« articled from. The furnture and eabmet-matung work*, boot factories, and coachbuilding works I were full of work. He did not think that the busy times in Auckland were ! temporary.
