AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION. Annual meeting. (From the Auckland Star." ) May 9.
The annual meeting of the above Association was held this afternoon, in the office of the Secretary (Mv W. Pevcival), there being piosent :-Mossrs Joseph May (in the chair), J. Dihvorth, J. Bainbridge, Jas, Wallace, A, Anderson, W. F. Buckland, F. Lawry, J. W. Wallaco, W. Dunwoodie, D. Nolan, J. Wills, A. Buckland, and J. Lennard. The Secretary submitted the following report, balance-sheet, and profit and loss account : — i Your Committee have to report that the operations of your Association, in a financial point of view, have not boen much more sucoessful than in thoprovious 5 oar in consequenco of the heavy burden for interest and other charges. The ploughing match held in Juno last as regards ploughing was a great success, also as far as the attendance was concerned, but it lacks that interest amongst those that should take a part in it for somo unaccountable cause. The sth horse pai'ade was a great success, both in the attendance and tho quality of tho hoises shown, and your Committee have every reason to be proud of the last parade. The entries for the Annual Show show favourably to those of previous yoars, as tho following table will show :~
Tho attendance, too, was much larger than the previous year, the gate money totting up to £128, ugainst £2GG in 1882. There is a slight increase in tho number of subscribers, but not so much as you would like to see. Your Committoo recommend that there bo no ploughing match this year. That all prizes to be offered at tho forthcoming Show be in tho form of medals. Tho gentlemen retiring tire Messrs Joseph May (President), Thos. Momn (VicoPresidont), Wm. Mr Dilworth said that tho small attendance shewed that the country people took very little interest in tho Association. He considered it a matter of regret. Mr Buckland followed in a similar strain. After some further discussion of a desultory character, the report and balance-sheet were adopted upon the motion of Mr Dilworth, seconded by Mr Anderson. The following officers were then elected : — President —Mr Thos. Morrin. VicePresident— Mr W. F. Buckland. Treasurer—Mr Alfred Buckland. Tho retiring officers of tho Committee were re-olected, and Messrs C. Atkin, John Bycroft, and Wiseman, were added to it. On the motion of Mr Anderson, seconded by Mr DuNwoomu, Messrs A. Buckland, J. Mays, Thos. Morrin, J. Dilworth, and J. LJamb were appointed a Sub-Committee to arrange about office accommodation. Mr . F. Lanyry moved : " That in the opinion of the members of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association at the present annual meeting of the Association, the time has arrived when the tollgate on the South Road at Newmarket should be abolished, and the bridge across the Tamaki river at Panmure should be declared free." Mr W. F. Buckland seconded the resolution, Mr J. May opposed the resolution, land Mr A. Bucklan-d strongly supported it saying inter alia that the people who had tolerated the Newmarket toll for so many years were the most long-suffering donkeys in the colony. Mr La wry having replied, the motion was put and carried, the Chairman being the only dissontient. Messrs F. Lawry, W. F. Buckland, and J. Dilworth were appointed a deputation to wait upon the Minister of Public Works, and urge him to give effect to the resolution. This concludod the business.
Regarding the so-called "accident" to Mr Stubbing at Taupo (of which we published particulars a week ago), a correspondent of the "Hawke's Bay Herald" says :— " It was no accident on the part of the injured man. From what I can gather it came about in this manner : Mr Stubbins and two or three Europeans were walking about the hot springs, when a half-caste from Wanganui began sky-lark-ing with him and shoved him towards the boiling ngawhas. Mr Stubbins, not being able to stop himself, tried to jump across, but fell right in the centre of the spring, and had to swim five or six strokes before he reached the side, when Mr Edgecombe, a surveyor from Waikato, stooped down and pulled Mr Stubbins out by the hand." At Palmerston North, the other day, a little child fell into a well fSOft. deep, but was kept afloat by its petticoats until Rescued,
