London, May 7.— Tenders for £$00,000 4 per cent, loan for Tasmania were opened to-day, and were found to amount to a total of two and a quarter millions. London, May 8. — M. Blowitz, the Paris correspondent of the London " Times," writes that if the Australian colonies are not clamorous in regard to tho recidivisms question, the wisdom of the French Senate and the costliness of the scheme will probably prevent the measure from being brought into active operation. The "Times " says the attempt to revive the Oriental Bank Company has been Abandoned. The Board of Directors are now endeavouring to form the assets of the company. Gordon Pasha has succeeded in cutting a trench between the palace of Khartoum and the position where the rebellious portion of the inhabitants are situated. London, May 8. — Intelligence has boon received that the steamship State of Florida, trading between Glasgow and America, which was reported as ,«everal days overdue, came into collision with a barque i« the Atlantic, and sunk almost i immediately. Of 167 souls on board, only 44 were received by the barqite or saved in the steamers' boats. The Oriental Bank Corporation, which suspended payment on the 3rd instant, was compelled to adopt this course in consequence of the rapid and unexpected withdrawal of deposits at its eastern branches. An examination which has been already made of the available assets show, that depositors will probably receive 17s 6d in the pound, and in the meanwhile tho liquidator will undertake the management of the company's estate in the Mauritius. Her Majesty the Queen arrived at Windsor Castle from Darmstadt yesterday evening. London, May S.— News is to hand of a disastrous explosion at a factory of Nobel's j Explosives Company at Stevenston, Ayrshire. Ten girls employed in the works were killed and other employe's more or less seriously injured. Lord St. Leonards has been committed for trial on a charge of indecent assault upon a female servant. Bail was refused by the Court to His Lordship. The International Food and Health Exhibition at South Kensington was formally opened to-day, the ceremony being performed by the Duke of Cambridge. The proceedings passed off with eclat. At the Crystal Palace Exhibition Mr Gladstone was hissed for the delay which has taken place with regard to the relief of Khartoum. London, May S. — Thos, Hugh Shortland, who was arrested at Plymouth on a charge of wife-murder, was for many years a resident of Auckland. Lord Derby privately condemns the Recidiviste Bill as an infamous scheme, and states that any attempt to export criminals to New Caledonia must be stopped. Messrs Dalgety, Dv Croz and Co.'s shares have been fully subscribed, and the debenture stock has been largely subscribed. Information from the Cape states that the vessel Bulli, bound from London to Sydney, has stranded at Paternoster, which "is situated at the south end of St. Helena's Bay. The twenty carcases of froeen mutton ex the steamer Lusitania, which Messrs Simon Fraser and James Winter cent to Paris for sale, have realised G^d per lb. The Queensland loan will be announced shortly. London, May 9. — A number of Australian colonists now resident in London have decided to entertain Sir Henry Loch at a banquet prior to his departure for Melbourne. It is announced that the Turkish Government is willing to adhere to the proposed European Conference, provided the whole of the Egyptian question is discussed. The Porte requests that the Conference should meet at Stamboul. London, May 9. — At to-day's auction 10,000 bales were offered. The market continues firm. Good wools of every description are now realising a halfpenny higher than at the close of last auctions. London, May 10.— In the wool sales, cro°s-breds have improved a halfpenny. Other wools are firm at the reduced prices obtained at the opening of the sales, but there is an occasional advance. One hundred and fourteen thousand bales have been catalogued, and ten thousand withdrawn. London, May 10. — In the House of Commons to-day, Mr Gladstone stated that Egyptian finances would form the basis upon which the forthcoming Conference would be held, but that this would not preclude any Power from raising other ques tion?. London, May 10. — Egan and Daley, dynamiters, who were arrested three weeks ago at Birkenhead and Birmingham, have been committed for trial. London, May 10. — The formation of a new bank to take over the business of the Oriental Bank Corporation, is now proceeding under the direction of the Company's solicitor. Messrs Hepburn and Ogilvie have been appointed attorneys in Melbourne to collect the debts due to the Oriental Bank. The scheme for the revival of the Oriental Bank is condemned in the press, and the best business names have been withdrawn from it. Shares in colonial banks generally are depressed. The Court has directed that Oriental Bank drafts shall be debited to the account of the Victorian Government. London, May 11.— The " Observer " this morning publishes a telegram from a correspondent at Cairo stating that orders had been received there from the Imperial Government to make preparations for the despatch in October of a force of 10,000 men to relieve General Gordon at Khartoum. It is also further stated that Lord Wolseley will command the expedition. London, May 11. — It is reported that Lord Wolseley will, in October next, lead a force of ten thousand men to the relief of Khartoum. Madagascar is willing to cede the Islands on its coast to France, and to pay an indemnity. The Enderarnan, from Java to Greenock, with a crew shipped in Melbourne, is believed to be lost. Mr Heaton, of Sydney, urges the formation in London of an anti-Recidiviste Society. Cairo, May 9.— The Egyptian commanders of Dongola and Koresko, towns on the Nile to the north of Berber, have sent a communication to the authorities in which they express themselves as anxious for the safety of these towns. Government has accordingly ordered reinforcements to be sent to strengthen the garrison at both places. Cairo, May 10. — Despatches have been received from the Governor of Gondola announcing that the country to the southward of Debbeh is in open rebellion, and that Khartoum is completely invested by the rebels. Messengers whom he has despatched to the latter place have been unable to reach it. Hong Kong, May 9.— The latest telegrams received here from Pekin state that the Imperial Chinese Council has condemned the proposal submitted by Lee Hong Taao, Secretary of State, in favour' of the immediate conclusion of poace with France.
Cape Town, May 9.— lntelligence is to hand from Zululand that a serious rising of the tribos has ocourrod there, and Mr Osborno, the British Resident, has asked the Imperial authorities for immediate military assistance.
