MORRINSVILLE. From our own Correspondent. ) Wednesday.
A i, vhge quantity of oats were grown in this district tliis season, ami in nearly every instance the Ci'op is above the avenge. On Messrs Alorrin and Studholine's estate about 500 tons of oaten hay lias been staekeJ in first-class condition ; and tlie men are now busy thatching same. These gentlemen lately despatched (via Hamilton) 100 head of really splendid fat cattle to the Auckland market. About 4000 sheep are now located on the large tract of swamp land on fiis estate that was drained and sown down last year, the clover has turned out a fine crop ; being in many parts 3 to 4 feet high> in fact tnis land now affords some of the best fued on the estate. Rmnonr, busy here as elsewhere, states that negociations are at present being carried on for the disposal of this large 'and valuable estate (con-isti >q f some 28,000 acres more or les<, and containhm some of tie best land in this part, of cue colony) to some (English and ot ler) capitalists, and it is further asserted that s.iould the proposed sale take pace thi» puichasers int 'ill cutting up the property into ?uit itile I'urms. C'Tt.iin it is that several iarye an . well-:cno.vu capitalists have lal.ily visited this district, and tliat they spent several days carefully looking over the property referred to. A uiuvo of this character would certainly Ue Ueneficia , by bringing a number of settlers of a good class into the district, nnd as a result, we might expect to see much iucreused employ oL labour, and the whole district uiucu benefitted. The draught colts on this property (about 40 in number) are of a very superior class. The lot of colts draughted out by Mr Morrin and seat to Auckland last year for sale, uvongo), 'l believe, £3$ a piece. Mr Morrin has done much to improve tie general class of draught stock in this part of the country. I understand " i^oung Melbourne" was well patronised ttiis year, the coits got by this horse last year are a really good lot. Messrs Marvin and Sfcudliolme arrived here this evening, and I believe purpose remaining some days. They o stopping ut the Pnoanix Hotel. The new bakery, established in this place by our enterprising young storekeeper. Mr H. J. Clifford, is well supported, and has supplied a long-felfc need. This store is well supplied with all classes of goo Is, and has been much enlarged and improve I of late. Nothing is definitely settled with respect to the establishing of a fnll-timo school here. Certain bis that such is now.ieedud, a half-time school being altogether inadequate to meet the requirements of the district. The ballasting and platelaying of the • railway line from H-imilton to Morrinsville is bem** 1 actively proceeded ,with, and I hope to see this part of the work completed before very long. The contracts for the erection of station buildings, &c, has been accepted. On the completion of the line to here, I expect to see a large influx of population, as the district offers many advantages, not only to working men from the various railway works in course of progression, but also to those looking out for goo- 1 land for f {inning purposes. The Rotorua railway bridge, just outside the township, is being proceeded* with, the concrete pillars have been commenced, and soveral teams are engaged carting the piles needed. Messrs Mercer and Marshall and Messrs Hunt and White are both advertising for more hands. It is proposed to hold foot races and * other sports here on St.. Patrick's Day. Messrs Mercer and Marshall have^a, : number of ban 'snow employed, at, the -.* Oxford end of the Rotorua; link, an»l^ are 'making good progress ,_s&' s-" ' work. s "- ".. ;> '-> (L ( L r^.KL"^ Tlie new Licensing, Oomp)|fcfee{n§ld(v £• their first westing iv ' the 'Scuool-iroukfe
