REV. H. R. DEWSB URY'S LECTURE.

On Sunday last the Anniversary Ser- \ ices of tlio To Arohu "Wosleuui Cnurch were held, and on Monday the preacher, JUev. M. Li. Dcwsbury, of Cambridge, delivered a lecture in the Public Hall on Tom Hood, Poet and Humorist. L'ue chair was taken by T. Wells, Esq., and there were about seventy persons present. The lectuier spoke of the poverty and sufferings of his hero, and iiis cheerfulness under them ; and mentioned many other eminent men who had laboured under similar disadvantages. His childhood was briefly sketched, and specimens of his poetry and letters were given. " The Dream of Eugene Aram " and " The Song of ihe Shirt "' were especially well lecited, and eacn was accompanied with suitable remark*. The pleasure and benefit derived from works like those of Tom blood's were mentioned, and a review of the character of the man and the poet concluded the lectiue. The llev. gentlein <m is an eloquent lecturer and an elocutionist, and the evening's entertainment was an intellectual treat. The customary votes of thanks closed the proceedings.
