Perhaps never has there been more astonishment in turf circles than yesterday afternoon when the wires Hashed that The Poat had won the Wellington Cup. With the pen put through the name of Mischief, and Welcome Jack and Tim Whilllor doubtful starters, it was thought that the race was next to a certainty for Vanguard, and 10's to 1 were going a-begging in local circles about Mr Bate's gelding. It is not the first time that this gentleman has defeated the Grip Lodge party in the event under notice, and came to the rescue of the fielders, for in 1882 by the aid of Hilda he was also successful in upsetting the odds laid on Salvage. iS'ohorsehasdonemorehard work for his owner than the son of Anteros and Fancy, but it cannot be said that hitherto he has been successful hi big events, for last season alone he had the misfortune to finish second in the Christchurch Metropolitan Handicap, A.R.C. Handicap, and Wellington R.C. Handicap, while he had to be content with third place in the Auckland Cup, Dimedin J.C. Handicap, Forbury Handicap, and Taranaki J.C. Handicap. The iN'ew Zealand Stud Company own both his sire and dam. The following is a list of winners of the Wellington Cup since its institution :—: —

A Maori Jockey Club. Wanwanui, February 2. — A novel jockey club has been introduced in this district under the name of the Ivai Iwi Jockey Club, all the members of which are Maoris. A programme has been issued for races to be held on the 14th inst. (in which added money to the extent of £S0 is to be given), consistingof Handicap Hurdles, 15sovs. ; Maiden Plate, 25sovs. ; Kai Iwi Handicap, 20sovs. ; Flying Stakes, lOsovs. ; District Handicap, losovs. ; and Consolation Stakes, ssovs. The first three and fifth are for Maoris only, the horses to be ridden by Maori jockeys only, in colours, the rest being open to Europeans. All the stewards and officers are natives, and in anticipation of the event a number of natives have horses in training. Kai Iwi is about ten miles from Wanganui, and there are several native settlements in the locality.

Sylvanus, a son of Goldsborough and Paradigm, who was brought to New Zealand by Mr H. Prince some years back, recently died from a severe attack of rheumatism at Mataura. He had been standing for some time in that distrist. It is stated in English sporting circles that an American millionaire is about to establish a gigantic racing stud in England, and that he will not confine himself solely to English horses, but will also have several American-bred ones in his stable. The yearling colt by Angler from Lurline (says "Augur") has been named " Maroon--dah." This youngster is almost a facsimile of his near relative Darebin, and it looks go for anything he should worthily uphold the reputation of the family. Sir Thomas Elder has definitely decided to have his racing stud submitted to auction in May next. The worthy knight will retire from the turf, but the breeding establishment at Morphetville will be kept on under Mr Elworthy's management.
