A BREEZE IN THAMES TOWN COUNCIL. The Town Clerk Censured. Thames, January 18.

The proceedings at the meeting of Thames Borough Council last night were particularly animated, during the discussion of the recent action of Mr Dean, Town Clerk, in suspending Mr Mason, relieving officer. A very abject apology from the latter was received, coupled with a request for reinstatement, and Mr McCullough moved that the apology be accepted, and his reinstatement agreed to. The question was then raised whether the Town Clerk had authority to suspend a subordianate official, all present excepting Mr Speight holding that he had. Eventually, the motion was carried by four votes against one. Mr McGowan then moved that the action of the Town Clerk was bothinjudiciouy and uncalled for, which Mr Speight seconded. In the discussion which ensued, Mr Speight accused Mr Dean of personal interest in the prosecution of Mr Mason, for which Mr Dean gave him the lie direct, but added that if the police had not taken the matter in hand, he would have done so. Mr Speight : Just so. You felt a deep interest, and after punishing him by law, you made use of your position to attempt dealing with him a second time, until an apology had been extracted from him. After further discussion of a less ferocious nature, the resolution was carried by three votes against two. < At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr Dean expressed his intention of resi niug the post of Town Clerk, and at onco giving the requisite six months' notice.
