BOARD OF EDUCATION. Auckland, January 19.
The weekly meeting was held yesterday afternoon. There were present : Messrs Hobbs (in the chair), Carr, Goldie, Luke, McKenzie. Buckland, Moss, and Cooper. Building Grant. — A telegram from the department at Wellington stated that the amount of the building grant was £9,682. — In reply to a question, the Secretary said they expected £14,000 or £15,000.— The Chaiiman thought they should send a copy of their liabilities to Iho Minister, and protest against the small amount to their credit. Mr Goldie spoke to the same elFect. — It was agreed that the protest should be forwarded to Wellington, and also the following statement of the position of the building fund. Liabilities : Overdraft on December 31, 1883, L 2.035 6s 2d ; buildings under contract, 18S3, L 7,636 7s 9cl ; projected liabilities, L13.48J ss; grants, &c, L 700; playgrounds, Ll,500 ; unpaid accounts, say, LI SO ; total, L 25.502 18s lid Assets : Building grant to 31st March, 1884, L 9.652; playgrounds, Ll,400; balance for Mount £den,L4o; total, LI 1,122. Tauranga. — The committee appointed in reference to the resignation of the Tauranga School Committee recommended that information should bo obtained regardingthe requirements of the town for a second school, Freeman's Bay. — Plans of school to accommodate 500 pupils submitted. Cost £2,500 to £2,600. The matter was adjourned for a week, the plans in the meantime being referred to the City Schools Committee. Various local applications ware disposed of
By arrival of the schooner Saxon from Tonga we learn that shortly before Christmas a large brig called the Greyhound went ashore on a reef at Manuku. She was floated off shortly afterwards, with the loss of her rudder and a portion of her copper. A jury rudder was rigged and thus she was enabled to reach Habaai, where repairs were completed, apd &\}h left for Samoa early this month,
