Received J.m. 11th, 2.20 p.m. FRANCE AND MADAGASCAR. GREAT SUCCESS OF AUCKLAND CITY LOAN. London, Jan. Iq. Intelligence was received on the 7th inst. that the Malagasies had accepted the French ultimatum, and agreed to cede the northern portion of Madagascar This is not yet confirmed. ' ' Later news states that France insists on the establishment of a French protectorate over the whole island, and as the demand is objected to by the Malagnsy Government, matters are still unsettled. Tenders for the City of Auckland loan of £100,000 were opened to-day. The total amount offered was found to be £702,000. Tenders at £102 7s (>d Avill receive five per cent of the allotment, and tenders above that amount will receive in full.
Melbourne, Friday. It is understood that Messrs Synionds, Templeton, and Professor "Irving will constitute the new Public Service Board about to be appointed, and it is probable that Mr Agg, Auditor Commissioner, will be one of the menibeis of the Kail way Board.

QUEENSLAND'S POLTCY. Brisbanf, Friday, Griffiths, Premier, has made a statement of policy. The Government announces that notice will be <?ivcn to terminate the present contract with the British India Steam Navigation for a direct service with Queen sla d, and that in future immigration will he limited to 1000 monthly. It has been decided to make a change in the Agent-General-ship. The poll tax on Chinese will be increased, and the number-* allowed to arrive will be restricted. Trunk lin -s of railway will be extended, ami a start will be made with the line from the Gulf of Carpentaria.
