Fred Stenbcwse was chai'ged, on Ihtf information of W. Wilson, tfith riotous and disorderly behaviour at Te Aroha,whereby a breach of the peace" was occasioned on January Ist. Defendant admitted having been on plaintiff's verandah. | The evidence of the prosecutor" was to the effect that on New Year's morning ho was awakenod by some persons hnni'nerinir, at liis door, He opened the door and found ten or twenty persons on his verandah. They ran off, but he caught defendant. He was then surrounded bv s'jme n>en who jostled him. The picket fence w.is damaged, and the flower-beds trampled on. Defendant left quietly when witness ordered him. Fined ss, and 1 eoAta 7s. Four other lad-, Jdittea Kettlewood, Q. Tonge, and W. and Hu»h Mollen were charged with causing injury to a house belonging to J,i9. (Jlartce, anvf after bearing the evid.-iKv, His Worship fined eaol* of the deluii'dants ss, and ordered them to pay the d.uiKi^e £i, and costs,- or in default 14 rials' imprisonment.
AIiLECrKD LAttCKNY.-^A FALSE CHARGE. Walter Walker was charged on 1 the information of Znccheus Sleem.m of steding a cheque valued £b'. Mr Cuft" appeared for defendant, whopleaded not yuilty. Tlw plaintiff deposed that Mr J. Colemnn cashed an order for £8 Gs for him, giving- him a elvque lov £t>, two pound-* in notes and sonic si] ye?. Wasq-, nite s iber" at the time. He placed the cheque in u small pocket inside his flannel, and went" to Warren s and other hotels during the 1 afternoon. Did not recollect seeing de^ fondant in the afternoon, but saw him ii> the evening at Warren's, Was sine he never received change from defendant or" anyone else. He did not know where the/ cheque went t<>. Cheque" produced was the same as the one given him by Mr Golem m. Cross-examined by Mr Cuff' : [lad spent money in tin* hotel when- it was kept by Mr Walker son., but did not know defendant 'then Before going to Coleman's lie? w -r>t to \V n rent's- had a drink there, um\ asked him to cash the cheque. Defendant had no business to cash the cheque if he did so.
