TREATMENT OF AMALGAM AT TE AROHA BATTERY.
The manager of the Te Arbha battery has fur* nished tho following report on the above sub-'j jeet, which was warmly commented' on iri mining circloa a wcok or two ago :—" Waiorongamai, November 30th. 1883. ,To the Directors of tho Battory Company, Auckland:, i Gontlbmen,'— l have tho honour to acknowledge ! receipt of your lotter of tho 27th instant I regarding tho squeezing of the amalgam in cold water, and asking mo if I had rdceived instructions from anydno to do so, and if so, from whom. In reply I bog to state that' I received no instructions from anyone, using my own judgment as battery (manager. My reason for using cold' Water was' that, in' making some small" tests of Colonist and Premier amalgam, I used hot water with tho that, owing to the exrteme fineness of tho gold, fully three-fourths of tho amalgam passed through the squeezing cloth. This I havo had happen to me in Grahamstown when treating amalgam from tailings. I did not use hot water in, any of the previous orushings I have had at tho battery. Tho amalgam from the F claim, Inverness, and Moa No. 1, was all squeezed in cold water. Tho F claim had looses, amalgam, with a result of fiozs. retorted gold. The Inverness had SOcyAS, lOdwts. amalgam, with a result of 21ozs. todwts. retorted gold; and the Moa No. 1 had 2ozs. amalgam, with a result of 18dwts. retorted gold. The above wore my reasons for using cold water. You will iind that each cf the mine managers sent telegrams to their respective legal managers as to the result on the first two or throe days of cleaning tip, and Mr McLiver. manager of tho Now Find claim, informs me that in his first report to tho directors of tho mine he stated that the amalgam was squeezed in cold water, so that if a misunderstanding has arisen, it must have been through a misconception of facts. An article in the " Herald "of tho 19th inst. refers to me as having misled the public, and working the oracle, &c, as also in a subleader of the same paper, dated 2Gth inst., I am charged with gross mismanagement. My actions prove tho contrary. lam charged with working the oracle for certain purposes. I hold at the present time, and have held for some time, o4G Premier scrip, which have been saleable at 18s por scrip. 1 also purchased two days before the interim retorting IOONew Find scrip at Us each. This ought to be quite sufneiont evidence that I fully believed in the result of the retorting. Nothing has given me greater pleasure since my coming to reside in the To Aroha district than that of giving, as far as my duty permitted, the fullest information in my power to all representatives of the Press. Trusting you will see Jit to have this letter pubished.—l am, &c, H. H. Adams.
