PARLIAMENTARY NOTES.
After the late failure on the part of: the Opposition to obtain a vote of censure paused oil the Government by the House of Representatives, things have been quieter. On Tuesday hint, however, Sir George Grey scored another victory in moving for leave to introduce a bill providing for the amendment of the New
Zealand Constitution Act, by the abolition of the Legislative Council. The Speaker thought that the proposed measure would clash with the authority of the Imperial Parliament, and that as the measure had been passed by the latter body, it was not in the power of the Coloniil Parliament to amend or repeal it, or any portion of it. Sir George Grey insisted on pressing it, contended that they posBesaed the power, and that the Imperial Paliament would not be likely to offer any opposition to what they did. The Government opposed the introducing of the bill and a short debate ensued, but, on a division, Sir George Grey obtained a majority of four, the number of votes being, ayes 38, noes 34. The bill was then read a first time, but there is no chance of it getting i\ny further. The Minister of Justice introduced a Bankruptcy Bill, but the debate on it was adjourned. The Fisheries Bill was read a second time, and ordered to be committed. A resolution favorable to annexation of the New Hebrides passed the Legislative Council on Wednesday. In the House Mr Hutchinson brought in a resolution condemnatory of the sytitem of teaching trades in gaols and the debate was adjourned. The Treasurer made his Financial Statement on Wednesday last. It was of a congratulatory character, but, of course, is too long for UH to give aven the briefest synopsis. Oue satisfactory feature, however, was, that income exceeded the estimates by £76,750.
