WICKED BUT HONEST. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 29 What has the appearance of a cao of suicide occurred this morning at Sumner. A man was seen on the pier, who announced his intention of testing the depth of the water to a resident, who hastened to inform the .police. On his way he met another resident, who proceeded to the pier, hut the man had disappeared, leaving behind part of his clothing. In his coat pocket was a post office savings bank book issued to “John Baird, care of J. Studholme, Hinds,” also money, notes and silver. The pocketbook contained a message stating that the writer was the victim of an overwhelming vice, but had always lived an honest life, and wished his few debts to be paid. .
