FIRE ON STEAMER. REMUERA'S CARGO v-DAMAGED. WELLINGTON, Dee. 18. . Shortly before seven o'clock this morning the discovery was made that the cargo in the lowct 'tween decks . in No. 5 hold of the New Zealand ■Shipping Company's steamer Remu. era, lying at. King's Wharf, was on fire. The brigade -was summoned and after a strenuous fight of three hours succeeded in extinguishing the * outbreak. A quantity of wool and flax was destroyed. This was third fire of' the sam c nature on overseas vessels in this year. TWO. UP SCHOOL RAIDED.. POXTON, This Day. Constables Owen and O'Donoghue stalked and raided a two_up school in the target reserve yesterday afters noon, and took the names of 36 local and outside participants. The ren. dezvous was well sheltered at. th 3 foot of a sandridge and sur. rounded by a jungle« of lupin. The police wormed their way through tha lupin to the top of the ridge, front which they watched operations for upwards of two hours, identifying and taking names. Subsequently they came on the scene through the track when the majority scattered in all directions. The rendezvous is al reserve near th'o racecourse about; half a mile from the main road.

CHRISTCHURCH, Decf 18: Serious allegations of cruelty to girls aged 12 and 11 years were made in the Juyenile Court today. It was stated in .evidence that the father, who is in good financial circumstan_. ces, owning two farms, forced his two /eldest children to do all the housework, besides milking twelve cows daily. The magistrate adjourned the ease in order to g ve the father an oppor_ tunity to answer the charges. Mean_ time the children will he placed in a receiving home, and the father will not be allowed access to them.
