RANGITIKEI COUNTY COUNCIL.
ENGINEER-'S REPORT. The County .Engineer, Mr. S. A. E. Mair, reported as follows: Rangitira Riding.—No. 1 grader is at worlc trimming up roads around Silverhope special rating district, and necessary papers have .been completed for Teraketi loan of £IOO. Wangaehu Riding.—All roads have been opened for traffic and temporary bridges on Whdreroa Road niade secure. I propose to prepare plans for Kauangaroa Bridge- in jarrah, as it is the only, timber available at a reasonable, price. Otairi Riding.—Several :fresh slips occurred during the month, but all roads have been reopened. Large pipe Culvert on main road, Ohingaiti has been put in position. -Bi-idge on Ongo Road near Simpson's is in a state of collapse. I propose to re-erect in. reinforced concrete at a more suitable site lower down. $ Te Kapua Riding.—Several roads are still blocked, as men are not available to reopen. ! Fair fjfrojgress has b*jen made with metalling contract on Murray's Pack at Tiriraukawa. Large culvert which washed out on Whaka Road has been renewed. Tenders have been invited for metalling 230 chains. Okaka Road, with burnt papa. No. 2 grader, being hauled by Cleveland tractor, has been employed on roads south of Taihape. I have let contract No. 509. metalling McDonnell Road, to Messrs. Vickers and Brown, contractors from Wanganui.
Ruanui Biding.—Slips are being cleared as expeditiously as possible. Repair metal is being spread on Main Road, ffihitahi After repeated promises to recommence hauling ballast, to Turangnrcre, the Railway Department finally withdrew train, only hauling 110 yards. Fair progress has boon made with quarrying and hauling metal on Owhakura Road, Raketapaumn. JTho contractor for metalling Opaea-Tu-rnngaarero Roifd will recommence work directly road is fit to cart upon. Tenders are invited for three roadmen ? s cottages of four rooms each, at Mataroa, Turangaarcvo and Rangiwaed; espectively. Erewhon Eiding, —Slips have been cleared, and pipe culverts are being placed in position at Moawhango." TSTo. 1 motor truck has hauled repair mr ! ;al to "VVainni Road repairing sawmill damage. Awarua Riding.—Many roads are still blocked with slips, but are being opened as labour is, available. Fair progress has been made with contract No. 504 R, KotukuraerOfi Road, but little has bc-sn done an controct 504 0 on same
road. No. 2 grader is working on Ohutu Roads, and No. 1 truck is •Hauling repair gravel to Torere Road. I have received advice from! Scotland jthat cables for Upper Kawhatau bridges should arrive at Wellington by the Orari, and have arranged for passing them through Customs, etc. Cement has been ordered and timoer is being cut for this job. I have let contract No. 497 Inland Road, to Vickers and Brown, contractors, of Wanganui, at a satisfactory price. General.— Onepuhi bridge is now complete and open for traffic. I would recommend that a cattle yard be erected immediately near west approach. I met Oroua County Engineer at bridge, and he is putting" his road in repair and will erect a suitable yard. I also suggest that the east approach be fenced to prevent stock breaking down embankment. No. 1 Leyland dump truck was delivered at Taihape during the month. The driver appointed did not take up his duties, but left without notice, as he stated he could not get a house. I have appointed a suitable man in* his place. The truck is doing good work. I have engaged a suitable driver in Wellington for No. 2 Leyland truck, which sh'oulcl be delivered at HunteifVnie about end of month. ,
