ALLEGED ILLEGAL BETTING
AUCKLAND, Nov. 24. Just about the hour the first race was timed to start at Takapuna today Ddtective-S-ergeant Hammond and Detecetive Knight, on the hunt for evidence of illegal betting, made an unexpected appearance at a shop in Victoria Street which stands behind the sign "Loughlin Bros., Auctioneers.'*' The premises are thinlystocked with pictures, pottery, travelling trunks, i-'etc, which bear occasionas justification of the printed sign on the windows, "Dealers and Importers." The defectives did not wait to inspect the stock on exhibition, but hasteneded to the office, where they acGpstfed two men who were considered to be running the business, JacX Loughlin ana Joe Nixon, and warned them they were under detention. a search of thie office was made, and a quantity of documentary matter *n the shape of printed tables, written memoranda and cheque books, alleged to have reference to betting matters, were seized, as also was a sum on £l5O in cash. The two men wsere immediately brought before Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M., on a charge .of keeping a common betting house, and were remanded till Monday, bail being allowed on deposit of the cash seized at the shop.
