RAILWAY BUSH PURCHASES

GROUNDLESS RUMOURS. WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. * Rumours are current regarding an alleged scandal in connection' with a large purchase of bush country by the Railway Department in the North Island. The matter came to the knowledge of the Minister of Railways, who set up a* Departmental Commission of Inquiry,, comprising Messrs. Thompson and Riddell, stipendiary magistrates. Their report, I understand, completely clears the department of any other person of any suggestion of improper practice, and shows the transaction to have been perfectly sound from a business point of view. Your correspondent endeavoured' to obtain particulars -of the commission’s report, but this is not being made public, as the inquiry was purely departmental.—Star.
