JAPANESE STEAMERS.

TROUBLE LOOMING; TRANSPORT WORKERS TAKE' ACTION. WELLINGTON, Nov. 3. The first public intimation of pos* sible labour trouble came to-lay when, at a stop-work meeting of the Wellington Waterside Worker:*' Union, a letter was read from the Transport Workers' Advisory Board, stating that a communication, asking that unions affiliated to the federation should take concerted action against the employment of Japaneseowned and manned steamers in the inter-colonial and inter-State trades, had come to hand from the Austral-' ian Transport Workers' Federation. The meeting decided to support the Advisory Board in any steps it deemed fit.

It is understood that the New Zealand Transport Workers, including Seamen, have decided to take action Jn the hope of preventing the further nee of Japanese steamers in the New-castle-New Zealand coal trade. Two of these vessels are discharging cos? for the Railway Department, in Wellington. As the coal was bought on acxf. basis, the Department did not charter th.e vessels, nor is it directly; responsible for the payment of freight. It is contended by the Transport Federation that the employment o?-low-paid Japanese crews is unfair competition against New Zealand an* Australian shipowners and seamen.
